Q: Fareston Treatment in Premenopausal Women with Hep C

I recently started treatment for breast cancer, my oncologist prescribed Fareston.  I am taking one pill/day and then decided to do a little research.  I read that it is for postmenopausal women (I am not) and should not be taken if one has a liver disease (I have Hep C).  My doctor said that this was the best choice it has less side effects than the other choices (tamoxifen) but now I'm worried after reading this information.  Is this really true?

Thank you so much for your valued response.

Kristine, are you not in the U.S.? Last I heard, Fareston was approved for use by premenopausal women in Europe, but in this country was still undergoing trials for anything other than metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women; it hadn't yet been FDA approved. So if you're in America, I'd ask your doctor pretty closely about when the trials were completed, and the results, and when the FDA approved it. It's true, Fareston doesn't come with the risk of endometrial cancer that tamoxifen does. However, tamoxifen has been in use for 30+ years, and is a proven winner. I don't know about the liver disease connection. Bottom line: discuss this with your doctor further. Good luck - PJH
