Hi - Nipple discharge can be caused by a variety of different factors, though usually NOT breast cancer. Please read this article on nipple discharge from the Mayo Clinic Web site; I think it'll help you. Also, best make an appontment with the doctor to find out what the cause might be in your case, and what youmight do about it. Good luck - PJH

Poppy, reading this article about nipple discharge should reassure you.  Discharge that comes from both breasts and that occurs when you squeeze is perfectly normal.  It would be a good idea to stop squeezing because that might be irritating your nipples.  When you get pregnant, your body will produce the hormones to make milk for your child, so don't worry about that either.  Your doctor has taken your concerns seriously and run the tests needed to check your health, so I would advise putting your fears aside.

If the pain and swelling have started since you saw the doctor, you might want to schedule another appointment.  Tenderness and some swelling are not unusual before a period, but if only one side is noticeably swollen, you might have an infection.

Hi - Nipple discharge can stem from a number of causes, almost all hormonal, though sometimes due to infection. Only very rarely does nipple discharge signal breast cancer. Please read our post on nipple discharge for lots of good information about whether/when to see a doctor about this; with the different types of discharge you're experiencing, I'd think you'd want to see a doctor simply to find out what's causing it. Best of luck - PJH
