Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, June 25, 2009 HopefulOne asks

Q: ACTaxotere or Dose Dense ?

I am 45 and was diagnosed with estrogen and progesterone hormone receptive, highly invasive, ductile carcinoma.  My mass was 1 cm by 2 cm and 1 of 16 lymph nodes was positive.  I felt some slight pain and discomfort in my right breast during my cycle and it didn't go away after my cycle ended so I scheduled a mammogram and checkup.  That is when the cancer was detected in my left breast. TAC or Dose Dense?  I need to choose.  AC plusTaxotere every 3 weeks for 6 cycles or Dose Dense treatment AC every 2 weeks for 8 cycles followed by Taxol every 2 weeks for 8 cycles.  What do you think about my choices or which would you choose?

Well, it's a toss-up. Early trials seem to indicate there may be some advantage going the dose-dense route... although it's quite toxic, which is why it's given sequentially with taxol, rather than at the same time. I think you need to carefully go over side effects with your oncologist or, better yet, your oncology nurse, who might be able to spend more time with you. Like many decisions around cancer, this is a tough one; but it's one only you can make. It's your body, and your future. And whatever you decide, it has to be right for YOU. Good luck - PJH
