Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, June 25, 2011 Tennessee Lady asks

Q: I have an itchy right nipple. Mammogram clear, Doctor doesn't see anything out of the ordinary. I am afraid it is something wrong and no one sees it. Could it be a nerve? I'm 61 and large breast.

My Dr has examined my breasts and didn't see anything unusual, no dimpling, rash or crusty skin, my mammogram didn't show anything, they said they saw no change from last year, but I feel it is paler than the left. I'm just wanting to know it isn't some underlying disease.

Hi - So far you've taken exactly the irght course of action: you noticed a change in your breast, and saw your doctor about it; and the doctor felt your symptoms were worth a mammogram. Now that the doctor's examination shows no outward symptoms of anything, and your mammogram shows no change from your baseline, you have a decision to make: are you stressed, and feel that you won't be able to relax until you know what's causing this itching? If so,seek a second opinion; ask your doctor for a referral to a breast specialist.

Another course of action would be to wait and see if this itching goes away on its own. It might possibly be a temporary reaction to something - a tiny imperfection in your bra, a minor infection, some blocked oil glands in your areola, the beginning of a blocked milk duct... Maybe a one-sided reaction to a change in shower gel or laundry detergent, or a minor skin irritaiton of some kind. If you can stand the itching, you might consider waiting a few eeks to see what, if anything, develops. With all the first-level tests showing nothing, this is a course of action you might consider before seeing a specialist.

Good luck - I hope this resolves on its own soon. PJH

Thank you very much for your response.  The itching is not that bad, and it isn't all the time, but the difference in color, sometimes it is more of a beige color rather than pink and there is just a hint of difference in sensitivity.  Because of my age and the size of my breast vs my size, I'm 4'11" and bra size is 38 or 40 C, I'm wondering if I hurt the breast running.  I try to hold them to me when I am running (not jogging, running lightly on Wii) and I can't find a bra to give me the support I really need.  Of coure I would rather have something like this instead of a cancer.  Do you think I should have an ultrasound?  I plan to call my doctor after the 4th holiday.  I was hoping it would resolve itself.  All bras, soaps, detergents, everything is the same, by the way.  It was time for my regular yearly mammogram, but I wonder if they should look at it closer.  Sorry.  Just very nervous about this.  Thanks for your response and have a great rest of the week-end.

An ultrasound probably wouldn't help - it's used to determine if you have a cyst, and the symptom for a cyst if a soft lump, not itching. If this is still going on after a month or so, and if, as I said, you feel very stressed, then ask to see a breast specialist. As for bras - have you tried J.C. Penney? Each store is supposed to have a professional bra fitter, and from what I've heard, they're very good. You might look into that, to get something that's comfortable and offers the support you need.

Again - hopefully this goes away by itself soon, and you can stop worrying. Enjoy your Sunday - hope you can relax a bit. PJH
