Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 yvonne laidlaw asks

Q: Why do general surgeons do qualified plastic breast surgery? They cause much more disfigurement.

I have been left with a very severe disfigurement due to bad surgery conducted at Royal Bolton Hospital.  Why are some of the bad general surgeons in existence allowed to continue in their maiming of women? The abuse of the patients' human rights is also another factor which is immoral when dealing with the NHS and its antiquated system.

Frequently informed consent is not given by the patient, and this is mainly because the surgeons yield too much power over us as their clientele. We are sometimes led like lambs to the slaughter with certain surgeons standards.

Do people believe that we should be given more equal rights over our own care rather

than be controlled in the manner that we are expected to accept.

Do you agree there is a wide difference throughout the country in the standards of breast reconstruction when a diagnosis of cancer is made?

Yvonne, I'm not familiar with the details of the British medical system.  In the U.S. general surgeons are usually certified to do mastectomies and lumpectomies.  Plastic surgeons do most of the reconstruction surgery here.

In any country, women sometimes realize all too late that their plastic surgeon was either incompetent or made an error despite generally good record of competence.  Fortunately, most doctors do a good job.  I would expect that the NHS has similar variations in quality.  I would also expect that there is some mechanism for complaining about a doctor who did a bad job.

Maybe some of our other British readers could comment on your options from this point.
