Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, December 09, 2009 Tiffany14 asks

Q: I have a hard, small lump on my nipple and my nipples are often flaky or peeling, Breast cancer?

Im only 14 but this lump has been there for a few months and my nipples have been flaky and peeling for a little less. And sometimes my nipples itch real bad and look a little red. I know that breast cancer is not common in teenagers but i have been watching the lump for a little over a month and it has not changed nor moved. Breast cancer is very common on my dads side of the family. I usually get my period every 3 months for 11 to 14 days. Its been like that for a year and a half. Please help me.

Tiffany, kudos to you for being aware of breast changes (and your dad's family history of BC) so early in your life; such awareness will serve you well later on. Please read our letter to teens - I think it'll make you feel better. Indeed, breast cancer at your age is virtually impossible; but that doesn't mean you shouldn't get your breasts checked to see what's going on. Whether it's an allergy, hormonal changes, or whatever, please tell your mom (I know, embarrassing!); and see if she thinks you should see a doctor about this. Good luck - PJH

you probably just have skin irration on your nipples i have it too and i'm a teen too if you cant treat it with over the counter creams see your doc. for prescription strength. since your soo young its almost impossible to have breast cancer. but the lump could be a cyst which is not dangerous and if bothersome could be removed

Thanks for your feedback here, Carly - sounds like you're very aware of breast health, even at your young age. Kudos to you - this awareness will become more and more importnt as you grow up. Take care- PJH
