Q: Swelling and pain under arms after node removal

My surgery was 1/30 Had sentinel nodes removed from each side, there still is a lot of swelling& discomfort under my arms. Swelling is various lumps plumb sized. Any ideas on how to help the swelling /easy the pain? Ice seems to help the pain...numbs it, but is that the right thing to do? Aside from the lumps the swelling also is down my side about 8 inches long and about to the end of my rib cage. Is this normal?

Elli, you say your surgery was 1/30. If you've had this swelling and pain for nearly a year (1/30/10), then no, it wouldn't be the way most women heal. You should definitely talk to your surgeon and/or oncologist about this. If that was a typo and your surgery was more recent, then you might simply be healing slowly. We all react differently to surgery; and we all have our own timetable for healing. I'd hope you're in close touch with your surgeon, nonetheless; s/he might have some advice for dealing with the discomfort. Take care- PJH

it was this year.  and i see my surgeon every week, but they think is ok. just fluid, they say heat. but the heat doesnt help. ice numbs it.  I just think a month of swelling is a lot but then again I have never had a mastectomy nor nodes removed so I am in the dark about how long swelling lasts.

Healing always takes longer than we expect or hope it will, Elli - take your time. All will be well-- PJH
