Q: St Johns Wort

I am getting ready to start trying to get pregnant - one book said that St Johns Wort can cause a BRCA1 mutation.  Is that just for a fetus?  Or can St Johns Wort cause a BRCA1 mutation in an adult woman?  I'm confused if the BRCA1 mutation is something you're born with or if it can develop over time...... Please help.  Thank you.

Jane, I've never heard of the relaitonship between St. Johns Wort and BRCA1 mutations. I believe you're born with the mutation; I don't think it develops over time. But this is definitely a question to ask your OB/GYN, OK? S/he should be able to assess the safety of taking this plant while you're trying to get pregnant. Good luck - PJH
