Q: I have breast cancer, been having severe pain top of arm for months, could it be bone cancer

Am karen age 43.  Diagnoised june this year with invasive grade 3 breast cancer but had lump for a year before telling doctor.  I have had four lumptectomies and now need a mastectomy in new year about to start chemo on wed.  Having severe pain in top of arm near shoulder.  Could this be symtom that my cancer has spread to my bones?

Hi Karen - Sorry you're going through this. Yes, pain near your shoulder could be bone cancer. It could also be rotator cuff problems; something called "frozen shoulder" that you can get from repeated surgeries; or a number of other issues. Best thing to do is report your pain to the doctor, as (s)he will no doubt have some X-rays or an MRI ordered to see what might be causing the pain. Good luck to you - PJH

Karen even for one lumpectomy i had pain in shoulders for 1 complete year before it subsided. So there is no reason to be worried too much on this. I know a lady with 4th stage breast cancer a doctor herself was given 6 months to live with a mastectomy and chemo is free of cancer in her 8th year of survival happily continuing her job.
