Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Wednesday, August 05, 2009 Debbie Baker asks

Q: x-ray of lungs shows white spots....lung cancer?

x-ray shows possible signs of lung cancer- breast cancer recurrence.  I was diagnosed with bc in 2-'07.  I had a mastectomy..left breast.  I was HER2+.  My treatment was 4 mos of chemo and 1 yr of Herceptin.  The margins were clear and no lymph node activity.  Doc gave me 85-90% prognosis.  He's been doing blood work every 3 mos.  cbc and chem panel.  Never gave me the ca-125 test and did an mri on my right breast.  I had the tissue expanders placed in Jan. '09.  I had those removed and replaced 3 wks. ago.  I was not feeling good last week.  I was having a lot of pain inhaling, as if I had been running a marathon in really bad air conditions.  Headache and fatigue as well.  Went to urgent care Sat. they gave me a breathing treatment, and inhaler, then an x-ray before I left.  My primary care doc. called in in Mon. for an appt.  He told me I might have lung cancer.  I asked how did he know for sure.  He showed me the white spots.  He said they would most likely do an pet/ct scan and possible biopsy.  I am scared to death, believing that a lung cancer diagnosis pretty much means death.  My doctor said not necessarily.  His mother in law lived 16 yrs after diagnosis.  Should I insist on a pet/ct scan?  Help!!!!

Hi Debbie - Sorry you're having to go through this... the spots aren't necessarily lung cancer; I've known people who've gone through this scare, and it turns out to be an infection, a bit of pneumonia, or even scar tissue. Might be something conected with those implants. You'll need further testing to make sure what it is. As for what kind of tests, you should rely on your doctor to make that decision. Surely your health is his top concern, and he wouldn't skip any test that can show what, exactly, you're dealing with. So, one step at a time. Good luck to you - I hope things turn out well. PJH

Well that was a quick response.  Thank you for sharing positive possibilities.  I fought hard through my treatments and started teaching aerobics again after being out for 3 mos.  I am a fighter, survivor and I am trusting in the one who created me to take care of me.  God help me in my unbelief!!!!!  Thank You again.
