Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, November 17, 2008 D. Sparks asks

Q: fibrocystic breast disease

Have we found a better way to screen for breast cancer for those with fibrocystic breast disease?  Since I was in my 20's, (I'm now 43), I have had to endure a yearly mamogram because of my fibrocystic breast disease.  Due to this disorder, I fear my yearly mamogram and find myself putting it off too long.  For weeks after my mamogram, I have bruises, pain and discharge.  I usually then have to do a follow-up with an ultra-sound, and occasionally a biopsy.  Thankfully, so far the tests have been negative.  Haven't they found an easier, less painful way to check for breast cancer?  I am overdue now for my yearly mamogram and get cold sweats just thinking about it.

Absolutely. Women with fibrocystic breast disease and/or dense breasts are now regularly screened via MRI, in addition to mammogram. However, if your mammograms are so painful, perhaps your doctor would recommend MRI alone as a "first pass," with a followup mammogram if necessary. It's worth asking. Your doctor may need to work it out with the insurance company about why he's recommending MRI, so be sure to settle things with insurance (if you have it) before starting down this path. Good luck - PJH
