Q: Radiation causing hard, painful areas to my scar?

My breast scars from where I had surgery is getting raised, swelling, hard and uncomfortable. Its starting to feel like a 3 inch long hard lump. I hate it! Is this normal? Does this happen? Does it get worse? Or get better? This happened after 10 days. I've gotten pink since day 3. I'm getting Very tired. My eyes are so red and hurting too. My DR. says to put corn starch on my breast! Any other ideas? Your kind favor to reply is appreciated. Thank you, ~Linda~

Linda, I've found the radiation techs are often a better source of information than your doctor, at this point. Ask them your questions, and I'lll bet they have some tips for treating the redness and possible soreness. Ask them about your other non-breast symptoms, as well. I know radiation does cause hardening of tissue in the chest, and I'd assume yes, that would translate to your scar, as well. It should gradually dissipate once you're done with the treatments, but it does take awhile; sometimes up to a year, so be patient. Best of luck - PJH
