Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Monday, November 23, 2009 Lex asks

Q: I have brown discharge from my right nipple and my left nipple is red, dry, and very itchy.

I'm concerned that I only have a discharge from when nipple (only when i squeeze it) and something is wrong with my other nipple. I have applied several ointments to the left nipple but it has been about 3 or 4 weeks and it is not getting better. Some websites say brown discharge is normal and some say its abnormal. What should I do?

Discharge when you squeeze your nipple is usually not considered a problem to worry about.  It's discharge that happens when you don't squeeze that's worrisome.  You need to see the doctor about the problem with the other nipple though because it's lasted a month, and your home remedies aren't working.  While you are there be sure to mention the discharge.  The dry skin on your nipple could be just that--dry skin.  However, it also could be an allergic reaction, any of several types of infections, or least likely, a form of breast cancer called Paget's Disease.  I hope it's something easy to treat once you get the proper diagnosis.
