Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, October 31, 2009 Curious Cashmere asks

Q: Been having a strange pain near my breast, but no lump. Anyone got any ideas what it might be about?

The thing is I can't tell whether the pain is actually in my breast or my heart most of the time. Although I am pretty sure it is my breast.

I have felt thoroughly for lumps and there is nothing of the sort. I've already made an appointment with my doctor to discuss it as i'm 18 years old and it is rather worrying now.

A strange thing is the pains come at random points, for example I was on the bus with my boyfriend one day and I suddenly clutched my chest in a sudden pain and he was worried about it also. So it's not as if it's only when i'm excercising or have eaten to quickly.

I am only about 7 pounds overweight for my height, I never eat fast food or have many fizzy drinks, I make all my meals from scratch and I think I eat rather healthily all in all.

As for family history, no one in my immidiate family or even the next generation after has had any illnesses due to breasts or their heart.

Anyone got any ideas what this might be about?

Thanks.

It's good that you have a doctor's appointment.  Sometimes pain we feel in the breast is coming from the ribs, muscles, and organs underneath.  Most of the time breast pain is not a cancer symptom.  When breast pain is cancer-related, it is usually more constant than what you are experiencing.  Reading more about breast pain can help you evaluate what is happening.  The doctor can discuss all the possible health issues that could be causing this.
