Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, February 07, 2012 M.Sayer asks

Q: Long lasting bumps, should I be worried?

I'm a 25 year old women and for the last three years I've noticed some bumps around my nipples. At first I thought they were pimples and left them be but one of them has remained for these three years without decreasing in size. I did at one point attempt to 'pop' it as it was oddly hard. The area around it isn't red, it feels slightly bruised at all times... even when I was able to remove any visible infection, it never goes away. What seems to come out is hard, white almost balls usually hollow centers. I've just left it alone this last year but I'm worried that it is not going away. Should I be worried about this bump? I do not know of any history within my family for Breast Cancer.

Since this is affecting both breasts, and it's gone on for 3 years, and considering your age - this wouldn't be a typical breast cancer symptom. I'm not medically trained, simply a breast cancer survivor; but it sounds like you may have some long-standing issue with the oil glands on your areola, the area around each nipple. Since it doesn't seem to be getting worse, I'd simply mention it next time you see your doctor about anything; s/he can make the determination whether it's an issue that needs pursuing. Good luck - PJH
