Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 Connie88 asks

Q: I noticed a raised bump/lump around my areola today.

After getting out of the shower I noticed the bump. It is not painful and I don't think it is an ingrown hair or pimple. I'm not sure what it is. It is slightly gray in the center and pink/brown around the edges. I have an appointment at the end of next week - should I worry or ask for an earlier appointment?

Connie, unless your breast suddenly seems to become infected quite quickly - red, swollen, painful, hot - I don't think the bump is anything you need to have seen on an emergency basis; next week will be soon enough. And please try not to worry; the vast majority of breast changes turn out to be NOT due to breast cancer. Good luck to you - PJH
