Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Saturday, March 06, 2010 Barbara Bachman asks

Q: I have been on Arimidex and would like to go off it? What may be the problems with this?

I have been taking this drug for 2 1/2 years and have been experiencing many side affects.  I had a bilateral mastectomy and would like to know what the chances of the cancer returning would be if I stopped this drug.  I would like my life back!  I will see my doctor soon but I would like info before I see him.

Hi Barbara - Obviously, your chance for recurrence or metastasis would be increased.  But by how much, statistically speaking, only your doctor can tell you. There's enough data in now that s/he should be able to give you a pretty good idea (e.g., your risk taking Arimidex is 14%, your risk not taking Arimidex is 18%... something like that, and I have NO clue what the actual figures are, because they vary for each person). If your risk is very low anyway, you'd probably want to look hard at quality of life vs. the presumed risk, and make the decision you feel most comfortable with. Good luck - PJH
