Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Friday, October 31, 2008 Denise asks

Q: I have an inverted nipple and had a mamogram. The tests show it's cancer.

My sister has had an inverted nipple for about 2 weeks now. She's just had a mamogram. The tests show it's cancer and it's malignant. She has to wait to see the surgeon to have a biopsy done. We have no history of breast cancer in the family other than colon cancer in a cousin on our mothers side. Should we worry?

Hi Denise - I'm a bit confused. Without a biopsy, how has it been determined it's cancer? That's the only way to know for sure. If the biopsy shows it's cancer, then she'll meet with a surgeon to see what comes next: probably surgery, at which point they'll determine if lymph nodes are involved. That information, along with the pathology of her tumor, will determine her treatment—either radiation, chemo, or both. Perhaps hormone drugs.

The great majority of women who get breast cancer (about 85%) have no family history, so it's pretty random.
