Hi Lara - a J-wire (it's in the shape of a J) is used to mark the spot where the surgeon wants to remove tissue; it's often used when a lump is too small to be felt from the outside. Using ultrasound or sometimes a mammogram, the radiologist uses a needle to guide the J-wire to the site of the tumor or abnormality. Don't worry, you'll have a local anesthetic and won't feel it. The surgeon then follows the path of the J wire to the tissue to be removed. Good luck Friday - hope the procedure goes well for you. PJH
