Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, December 15, 2011 sonicmolasses asks

Q: For months now, I have pain underneath and along the side of my left breast, to the underarm. I first thought it was from my underwire bra, but now I'm not sure. Braless for a few days-- still pain.

I don't feel a lump anywhere. I have a mammogram next week-- if I mention this to the tech, will they be able to investigate or should I also go to my doctor?

You should probably see your doctor. While breast pain is very seldom a sign of breast cancer, pain such as you describe could actually be a cardiac issue, since it's on the left side. And since you've had this pain for months, it's time to figure out just what's causing it.

Will the mammogram techs be able to investigate? I'd guess no; she'll screen the way she usually does, and leave it up to the radiologist to interpret the results. Still, it wouldn't hurt to mention this painful area to whoever's doing the views - she might make a note on your chart. Good luck, and I hope you get good results. PJH
