Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Thursday, January 20, 2011 Anxious asks

Q: I found a lump, six weeks ago, on the breast side of my left armpit. It is about a 1/4 inch in diameter and goes down into the tissue. It was itchy for a short time and that is how I found it.

There is no redness and it has not changed in size. I am away from home for the winter and won't return until mid April. Is this something that should be dealt with immediately or can it wait for a couple of months?

Any armpit lump that lasts longer than a month is a possible symptom of breast cancer. So, in good conscience, we can't tell you it's OK to wait to have it examined. Chances are good it's NOT cancer – but only a doctor and some diagnostic tests can rule cancer out for sure. Perhaps calling your regular GP, and describing the lump in detail, might buy you some time and peace of mind? PJH
