Study may tell who will benefit from preventive mastectomy

Texas researchers say they’ve identified markers that may help doctors identify which patients would benefit from a preventive mastectomy. The study is a response to statistics that suggest preventive (or prophylactic) mastectomies are becoming more common. Researchers say that while women who have breast cancer are at greater risk of developing cancer in the other breast, the overall risk is low.
