New screening technique catches more breast cancers

A new screening technique that "lights up" tumors may be better than mammograms at spotting cancer, doctors reported Wednesday. The method, called molecular breast imaging (MBI), found three times as many cancers and gave fewer false alarms than mammography alone among the study's 375 participants. Researchers note that MBI will not replace mammograms, but they point out that the experimental method may help doctors find cancer in women who are at high risk or who have dense breast tissue.
