(Science Daily) UPDATED 2009-01-19
Women who have undergone menopause can reduce their risk of breast cancer through exercise, even if their physical activity doesn’t prompt weight loss, a new study has found. Researchers say that two hours per day of light activity such as walking, gardening, and cycling may decrease breast cancer risk by up to one third. In the MARIE study of 3,464 breast cancer patients and 6,657 healthy older women, researchers found that the most physically active women were less likely to be affected by malignant hormone receptor positive tumors. This was true even if the exercise did not cause the women to lose body fat. Experts say it appears that exercise reduces the risk of breast cancer through hormonal mechanisms, rather than strictly through weight loss.
