Study may tell who will benefit from preventive mastectomy

Texas researchers say they’ve identified markers that may help doctors identify which patients would benefit from a preventive mastectomy. The study is a response to statistics that suggest preventive (or prophylactic) mastectomies are becoming more common. Researchers say that while women who have breast cancer are at greater risk of developing cancer in the other breast, the overall risk is low. In the study of 542 women, researchers found women who had cancer in their milk ducts, more than one tumor in the affected breast, and women who qualified as “high risk” using the Gail risk assessment method, were more likely to develop cancer in the other breast.  Read full story >
