Herbal HRT gains as prescriptions decline

The number of women who choose hormone replacement therapy (HRT) continues to decline, but among women who do choose HRT, many are turning to alternative remedies rather than traditional medications. Australian researchers found that the number of women who chose HRT declined by half between the year 2000 and 2008--mainly due to news that linked HRT to breast cancer and heart disease risks. But researchers found that in 2008, 25 percent of the HRT being used was herbal treatment. Experts say it's important for women to talk to their doctor about managing menopause symptoms, because most herbal remedies are untested for long-term side effects and effectiveness.
