Cancer patients should skip antioxidants: experts

Oncologists say antioxidant supplements may reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. But despite this link, a new study has found that 61 percent of breast cancer patients receiving chemo, radiation, or anti-estrogen drug therapy were taking supplements of antioxidants like vitamins C and E, beta carotene, or selenium. The evidence about antioxidants is by no means conclusive, experts say, and there is even some research that shows the supplements may protect healthy tissues during chemo. But doctors say that though there is not conclusive evidence about the supplements' effects, patients undergoing chemo should avoid taking them.
