Pausing HRT before mammograms doesn't improve imaging

Taking a break from hormone replacement before a mammogram doesn't lessen a woman's chance of being called back for extra imaging, a new study suggests. The study on 1,700 women found that the change in breast density caused by hormone replacement was not significantly lowered when women stopped HRT one or two months before a mammogram. Researchers say they had hoped a break would help lower the risk of false positives in women, since an inaccurate mammogram is responsible for 25 percent of the cost of mammograms in the United States, and it can cause extreme anxiety for women who have to wait for further testing.
