Weight lifting may ease lymphedema in breast cancer survivors

Historically, doctors have recommended that breast cancer patients steer clear of stressing the arm with strength training, but a new study has found it may help ease the painful swelling of lymphedema. In a study of 141 survivors, researchers found that those in the weight-lifting group and those in the non weight-lifting group had similar rates of swelling. But those who lifted weights had fewer lymphedema flare-ups, and fewer reported symptoms, scientists found.
