New drug attacks cancer stem cells

A drug used as an antibiotic on farms appears to attack breast cancer stem cells and slow tumor growth, a new study has found. Salinomycin has not yet been tested on humans, but researchers found that it was 100 times more powerful than Taxol in a study on mice. Experts say it could be several years before the drug is available to cancer patients, but they suggest that killing stem cells may help prevent cancer recurrence in patients who are prone to tumor regrowth.
