Women whose breast cancer recurs may be helped by a low-dose of estrogen, researchers say. While estrogen is known to fuel tumors, women who have been on estrogen-lowering drugs for some time may need some of the hormone in their body to help fight cancer off. A study of 66 women whose cancer had come back while they were taking an aromatase inhibitor found that 30 percent of them were helped by taking a low dose of estrogen. Doctors say this treatment helped the women avoid having to undergo chemotherapy again. And in some cases the cancer stopped progressing when patients went back to taking an aromatase inhibitor.
