Mastectomy not the first choice for many breast cancer patients

A new survey contradicts the belief that most women choose a preventive mastectomy. Researchers reporting in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that most consider more conservative efforts such as lumpectomy, and that doctors do a good job of presenting patients with a variety of treatment options. The survey showed that those who did opt for a mastectomy did so because they felt more comfortable with it, or erroneously believed that it would lower the risk of cancer recurrence.
