Mammography May up Cancer Risk in Some Women

Mammograms may increase the risk of breast cancer in women who are at high risk, researchers in the Netherlands say. An analysis of six studies found that women at high risk were 1.5 times more likely to develop cancer later if they were exposed to low-dose radiation. Women who had been exposed to mammogram radiation five or more times were 2.5 times more likely to develop cancer. Experts say early detection is vital in women who are prone to the disease, but they suggest that other methods of detection might be less dangerous.  Read full story >
