CT Scan Radiation Linked to Cancers, Deaths

Excess radiation from CT scans is linked to 29,000 new cancers and 14,500 deaths, two new studies suggest. Americans received 3 million CT scans in 1980 and 70 million in 2007--and the studies reveal that many patients may be getting more radiation than necessary during the medical procedure. Experts say radiation is a known carcinogen, but they also suggest that defining that risk is difficult. The biggest risk of radiation from CT scans seems to be among young people who may have many scans over the years, and more time in which to develop cancer.  Read full story >
