U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials have recommended revoking approval of the medication Avastin (bevacizumab) for the treatment of breast cancer. The decision was made based on the drug's poor performance in studies on its effectiveness and the potential for serious side effects from its use. But experts say the decision will not immediately affect breast cancer patients who are taking the drug, nor those who take it for other types of cancer such as kidney, colon, lung, or brain cancer. Avastin's maker, Genentech, now has 15 days to request a meeting to dispute the FDA's recommendation and provide further evidence of its effectiveness.
