FDA Revokes Approval for Avastin as Breast Cancer Treatment

The commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has revoked the approval of Avastin as a breast cancer drug. In June, an FDA advisory committee recommended that Avastin's approval be revoked, citing evidence that suggests the drug has limited effectiveness in metastatic breast cancer, but that it dramatically raises the risk of life-threatening side effects. The drug will still be available off-label for breast cancer, but experts say some insurance companies may stop paying for it, which would likely put it out of reach for most women since it costs around 88,000 per year.
