insurance for a pre existing condition

My current boyfriend has cystic fibrosis and was just recently cancelled by his private insurance carrier. I'm wondering what options are out there for him being that he has $1000 in prescription costs a month alone, so it would be pretty much impossible for him to go the six month waiting period that most insurance companies require. Is there anything out there that can help out during that six month or so waiting period?
