Legislation we need for caregivers is to make their life a bit easier, because they are taking on a job that no one wants--no pay, no gratitude, no work points, no appreciation. Social security could at least give caregivers work points for taking care of parents, so when they retire or if they ever need disability the benefits are there--because they have been WORKING. Caregiving is a 24 hour job! Also, health care options should be offered to caregivers, some type of caregiver health insurance pool (same negotiated price as Medicare would make me happy), more programs to give caregivers a break or if not they WILL also become ill--I am the case in point. Also, make access to their records easier not harder for caregivers, the puporse of HIPPA is to make it easier for patients NOT more difficult, healthcare providers have twisted this to mean the opposite.
Sincerely,
