Step three: While all these arrangements were in the making, Gail who has her own medical problems wouldn't be able to help with anything physical. However, she got coffee ready for the morning and made Steven a sandwich for Sunday lunch -- we had no idea what time I was going to be able to get back.

Step four: Calm down, get rid of the anger and call the airline to find out how and when they could get me back home as soon as possible. It's a long story but I did manage to get a flight the next day and I arrived home at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Step five: Call Gail and Debra and thank them profusely. "It's just what neighbors do," said Debra.  Maybe that's true when you are friendly yourself and let them into your life, but I never take anyone's help for granted and try and provide some in return, knowing that I always need more than I can give.

Hillary Clinton said: "It takes a village to raise a child." It takes a village to help a caregiving family too -- or at least a couple of wonderful neighbors.
