Dear Jackie,

My late husband suffered with a neuro muscular degenerative disease with Parkinson symptoms.  The doctors could never really explain the cause of his illness or why he deteriorated so fast.  He too had tremors in his hand, eventually lost all mobility and also lost the ability to talk or swallow.  In June, Hospice was called in to monitor his care and pain medication.  On the night of Oct. 27th, his breathing became very labored and he no longer opened his eyes.  I called Hospice and requested they send a nurse with a portable oxygen tank to ease his struggle.  The young nurse arrived without oxygen and said it wouldn't help him, but stood at my husband's bedside and slowly dropped morphine under his tongue until he quieted somewhat.  She called her supervisor, and together they figured out morphine dosages for the next twelve hours. She wrote down the instructions for me on a medication chart, told me to call back if I had any further questions and left, as it was nearing the end of her shift.

On the 11th hour, I gave my husband the dosage as she instructed checking with my son, who was at his father's side, to make sure it was correct.  Fifteen minutes after I gave my husband the morphine dose, the nurse called and said I shouldn't give him the dosage as she made a mistake and it would be too much.  My jaw dropped and I couldn't say anything except that I had already given him the medication.  She said, "Well, under the circumstances, that's OK" and hung up.  I went into shock.  I thought to myself, I can't do anything to change this.  My husband's heart stopped within 40 minutes of that dose.  My son was in disbelief and I became numb.

I know my husband was in the final days of his life, but how do you think this makes me feel?  Why did the nurse leave me alone at such a critical and emotional time?  Why didn't she take over and stay to administer his medication?  She just might have realized her mistake.  My husband was put in a morphine coma.  I don't know if he heard our voices or knew we were there with him.  I am haunted by this every waking minute.  He was 61 yrs. young.  I understand the emotions you are feeling and I hope you can find the answers you are searching for as to why your mother died from this horrible disease.  We both struggle to understand "why" this had to happen.  I wish you peace in your heart.  Ann
