Mom Trying to help
Topics:InsuranceHealthcare

I go to school full time. I see a Doctor for stress, depression and ADD. I am now told that I could be uninsurable for "Pre-existing conditions". I want to stand on my own two feet with out the financial assistance of my single mom, who is in no position to support me anyway.  Any information would be helpful.

Your first stop should be at the college or university that you attend. Many assess a student health fee that covers a variety of health services, and may cover your needs. Additionally, your insurability depends on your state of residence. Some states mandate "community rating" whereby everyone is guaranteed insurance at the same rate regardless of health status. Some examples of states with community rating are Maine, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. If, for example, you live in New Jersey, you can find "basic and essential" health insurance in the range of $125-$175 a month for a 24 year old student, with a six month exclusion of pre-existing conditions. If you live in a state that does not have community rating, then you may not be able to find health insurance, or if you do find health insurance, you may pay a much higher rate, which here in North Carolina is up to seven times the quoted rate. Your best bet may be to find employment that offers health insurance as a benefit, in which case it will be guaranteed issue, and your health conditions will not be grounds for rejection. You may also find that if you have a small business, you can get guaranteed issue health insurance as part of a small business health insurance package.
