Prevent hypertension and strokes

Untreated hypertension is associated with both Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Treating hypertension will prevent stroke and the prevention of strokes will prevent dementia. One study found that participants who developed dementia in their elder years had had significantly higher blood pressure fifteen years earlier. Taking antihypertensive drugs can reduce the risk of stroke and consequent dementia.

Folic Acid Deficiency

One study analyzed the diets of 579 people over aged 60. The participants kept detailed food diaries. Out of the original 579 participants 57 people got Alzheimer’s disease. The study found that those who consumed at least 400 micrograms (recommended daily amount) of folic acid were less likely to be diagnosed with dementia. We can get most of the folic acid we need from green vegetables and fruit; however, it is possible to take supplements in a pill form.

Folic acid is instrumental in decreasing levels of homocystein. Homocystein is an amino acid which at high levels has been linked to increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. A hopeful study showed that increasing the amount of folic acid in an impaired person’s diet can even cause a decrease in dementia symptoms. For eight weeks, in a double blind study, ninety mildly to moderately cognitive impaired elderly were given daily doses of folic acid.  The researchers found significant improvement on memory tests (Wechsler IQ Memory Scale Scores).

What it all means

As more and more research begins to accumulate a clear message is emerging at least for the present. We, humans, may have some choice in whether we get dementia or not. Granted, it may be more difficult for some than others -- those with a genetic potential or those prone to cardiovascular disease -- but even for these people there seems to be actions that can be taken. To summarize, here are some of the things you can do to lessen your chances or a loved one chances of getting dementia.

1. Do some type of aerobic exercise regularly 
2. Keep your mind active
3. Be positive
4. Take medicines to prevent hypertension and strokes
5. Eat fruits and green vegetables to increase the amount of folic acid in your system.
