Help with cholesterol that keeps rising

By leslie Friday, October 26, 2007
anyone with a suggestion, please advise.  45 year old brother in law that has had a heart attack and some TIA's is on 3 cholesterol meds (non statin) and his bad cholestrol has still risen to over 370.  He can not take statins as when he was on them previously he almost died when his kidneys shut down.  His body is producing too much cholesterol and the only thing they are recommending now is a procedure like a blood transfusion that is not covered by any insurance and is experimental.  Nothing seems to be working and it would seem at this time we are waiting for a the big stroke or heart attack to take him.  He is a former business owner who took a professional loss and now is on workman's comp from his job.  He is treated like a second class citizen since he isn't currently covered by private insurance.  He is the most amazing man, and everyone is overlooking him, and no one if following up.  Does anyone have any advice or things they have tried?  Anything would give us hope.

Dear Leslie,

I'm very sorry to hear about your brother's condition and I wish you and your family all the best.

The best advice would be from a medical doctor who is familiar with your brother's medical history and current treatment.

However, I've pulled together some resources from our sites that you may find useful.

Cholesterol Lowering Drugs

Information on Heart Attack Treatment and Rehabilitation

Information About Stoke

Lifestyle Changes for Cholesterol

Best of luck and please keep us updated on your brother's progress.

Katherine,

Many thanks!  We certaily agree that the medical doctor would be the best resource, but as I mentioned, no one has been taking the time to follow him very closely.  I will most definitely check out the web sites you suggested, and keep you informed as to his progress.  I continue to hope and pray that the meds somehow kick in after another month or two and we see a decline.

Thank you so much for your interest and response.

Leslie
