Familial high cholesterol / Recent heart attack

Hello,

Several years ago I was diagnosed with high cholesterol. I don't remember the HDL or LDL levels but the total cholesterol was 300. The doctor said based on the size of my frame (medium) height (5'3") and weight (132 lbs.) that I had a condition called familial high cholesterol and this was something that could not be controlled through diet and excercise. I was started on 80mg of Lipitor. The side effects of horrible muscle soreness and weakness started. With my active lifestyle this was unacceptable to feel as though I had been beat up all the time.

I stopped taking the Lipitor and sought holistic supplements which consisted of Red Yeast Rice, Garlic, Cayenne Pepper, Milk Thistle and Omega 3 Fish Oil. I no longer suffered from the horrible muscle soreness/aches and weakness.

Five years after the diagnosis of familial high cholesterol on 12/23/07 I had a moderate heart attack while playing a tennis match. I had a complete blockage and a partial blockage. Two stents were inserted and here I am again with taking Lipitor 40mg and feel the awful muscle aches/weakness. My total cholesterol level while in the hospital was 203 which tells me that the holistic supplements were working pretty well compared to a total level of 300.

I understand the importance of maintaining a healthy level of cholesterol and reducing the risk of another heart attack. Heart disease ran all through my father's side of the family. I also want to have a quality life where I can be active without the muscle soreness/weakness resulting from taking high cholesterol medications.

I would really appreciate any suggestions. I spoke with my cardiologist at my follow-up visit on 1/18/08 about the Lipitor side effects and was brushed off.

Seeking solutions,

Rhona

You did not say wether you exrecised aerobically, like moderately fast walking on a daily basis. This type of exercise is important. Oatmeal is also good at reducing cholesterol. Buy a kit from Walgreens pharmacy(18.00 for 2 tests) and monitor your chol. at home to see what works for you.

Hello,

I generally play tennis 2-3 x's per week so "no" I have not been excercising aerobically each day (i.e. fast walking). When I was at home on medical leave from the heart attack I was eating oatmeal every day. Now since back to work I eat a trailmix bar and a banana (0:

Wow I did not know that there was a kit you could purchase that you could monitor your cholestrol! Thanks for letting me know that Big Smile

Isn't tennis better for you than walking, who knows. Walking an hour a day realy is known for helping out with all the major health issues. It sounds like you need to go on a reversal diet regimen. The main problem is coronary desease. Very tough for most people to adhere to a reversal diet Every small change helps. The chol. kit tested out to be very accurate. I had a test done in the hospital several days after using the kit and the results were identical

Hi Rhona - thanks for your post.  I'm a moderator for the site and though not medically trained, I hope to answer your questions or guide you in the right direction to get them.

It sounds like you were not comfortable with the answer you got form your physician.  I;m thinking by now you have gone back and addressed your concern again.  If not you really should.  Sometimes we think doctors cannot be bothered and they really are just super busy and maybe in that moment not giving their full attention.  I could be wrong but you really sould go back and talk again.  Its so important for patients to be comfortable with the doctors they are with.

ow as far as your question - we have a few areas on the site that I think will be of interest to you.  First check out our treatment section to give you an idea of what is out there. As well, see out life style changes and our question and answer section - a few are concerning Lipitor.

Finally, you might want to read about heart health  on our sister site Heart Central.

Hope this helps - all th best, sue
