High Triglycerides

By houstonian007 Sunday, May 27, 2007
I had several stents. I also Had an open heart surgery in 2003 , since then I have. I have high triglycerides (389) despite taking both Zetia and Tricor as well as Omega-3 oil from flax seed & fish oil as well as 4000 IU of SLO Niacin. My other cholesterol levels are in check (LDL & HDL) I watch my food & exercise moderately.  I am not sure what else I must do to reduce the triglycerides to a "safe" level, can you help ?

I would like to hear from anyone whose doctor has taken them off Vytorin since the concerns raised regarding the continued use of this statin medication.

Have you been in a cardiac rehab program? How is your BMI? Weight loss can reduce triglycerides, which are often tied to carbohydrate intake.

What do you consider "moderate" exercise? Do you exercise at least thirty minutes daily to the appropriate aerobic level? This can be determined by your rehab nurse, as medications and exercise tolerance are linked to heart rate goals. (Recommendations are at least five days weekly.) Good luck....

I've been in the same boat, in Canada, for a number of years. HDL, and LDL appear to be Okay. Tri's are off the mark. Weight control seems to help, as well as no alcohol. Niaspan was working but I developed an allergic reaction and had to stop. Now I am not on any meds for cholesterol at all, and that has me worried. I seem to have reactions to most of the related meds, with sore muscles etc. Good luck! I'll follow this question with interest.

I also had the sore musles symptoms - very badly so. Until I started taking Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplements. The pains disappeared to this day. The sore muscles are often related to statin drugs being prescribed for cholesterol and or high trigl. But over and above that, CoQ10 is an excellent supplement to take.
