If you've been following along, you know from the article "Get a Grip on Fatty Acids" that the right ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids promotes a lower cholesterol.    The goal is not to cut omega 6 fatty acids (such as corn oil, beef, and chicken) completely from the diet, but to a...

Hi Lisa,  Is the ratio of Omega 6s to Omega 3s supposed to be 4:1 .... or 1:1 ???  Is it me, or is what you wrote a little confusing?

    Thank you!!

    Hi John,

I apologize if you found the recommendations confusing!  The ideal ratio is 1:1, but if you follow a diet that keeps your ratio between 1:1 and 4:1 you are doing well.

    Happy Holidays!

Hi Lisa, Thanks for the speedy follow-up and for clearing that up for me.

Regarding Cod Liver Oil:  I realize that methods of processing (or over-processing) is important, but is the Omega 3 content more important/significant than the Vitamin A and D content?  Some brands are high on the Omega 3s, but (relatively) low on the A and D.

Backatcha on the Happy Holidays!  Peace on Earth, goodwill and charity every day!!  Thanks again!!   John

    Hi John,

That would depend on your reason for supplementing the cod liver oil.  Are you more concerned with vitamin D deficiency or with promoting heart health (not to imply that vitamin D doesn't play and important role in all aspects of health!).

Here's my opinion:  If I'm supplementing cod liver oil its' for omega 3 fatty acids and the heart health benefits they provide.  I would be more concerned about finding a brand that provides a high content of omega 3's, specifically DHA and EPA.  A 1 gram supplement that provides 850 mg of EPA and DHA reduces heart disease risk 30%.

If you're goal is vitamin D and A and the supplement you choose does not provide an adequate amount of omega 3's, I'd recommend an additional omega 3 supplement.

    All the best,
