Hi,fellow blood-fat fiends:

I have TriGly 448,LDL117,HDL25.overall chol 183 (have ratio but not at hand)

I am w/ Kaiser.I have a good cardiologist who is generally very easy to communicate w/. I finally reached the point where I could not ignore my obesity, poor conditioning, etc. and have committed myself to the 10,000 step/day program. My doc wants me to got on Lopid for the Trigly.

After reading about the dire side effects of Lopid,I declined.

I am going to take 6 grams of fish oil/flax oil per day and Niacin/nicotinic acid (500 mg) every morning, that plus cutting way back on alcohol and making fresh fruits and vegs the largest part of my diet hopefully will work.

I am also on a beta blocker and thiazide for BP,which I read on this site also have a role to play in raising TriGly levels. My mother and her brothers all have high TriGly levels. I think genetics play a role also.

None of my uncles on my mom's side, nor my mom have had CABG or other proceduresdone to thier hearts even w/ the high trigly levels and they are all in their 70's and '80's. My dad and all his bros were  smokers and they all ended up with CABGs,carotid endarterectomies, heart transplants(my dad),etc. they have all passed away,in their 70's. I think Tobacco is the single worst risk factor re: heart disease. i do not smoke.

my maternal uncles like  their pints as did my paternal uncles.their diets and exercise levels were grossly similar with my oldest maternal uncle being an avid golfer. he is 80+ w/ alzheimer's.

My maternal uncles and mom did not smoke cigarettes, but my maternal uncles sometimes fired up a cigar or pipe.

Cigarettes are Killers. i am very thankful i never got hooked on them.

as far as statins and lopid: i think both of them carry too much(more?)risk by taking them then the risk from having bad numbers in the bloodfats.i will stick to fish and flax oil,a diet rich in antioxidants, niacin(not flush-free-the flush goes away in week or so)the proper oils frsh/raw fruits and vegs, exercise and in a year's time see what the labs are.if bad,

then i might consider the nasty drugs.

thanks for putting up w/ my rantings.
