Heat Waves and Heart Disease: What to do?

By SYoung, Health Guide Sunday, July 24, 2011
I know everyone out there is hot because this heat wave is hitting just about every part of the country right now.  How are people with heart disease to cope?  Related to this, how should people with heart disease and high cholesterol exercise when it is so incredibly hot and very unhealthy...

Very good advice. It is important for people to understand why it is so necessary to remain hydrated when exercising in extreme heat when one has cardiovascular disease. As we perspire more, we lose fluid volume. If we do not rehydrate, one's blood pressure will drop dramatically due to the decreased volume load in our system. When this happens, the heart tries to compensate by beating faster which can be very dangerous to a compromised cadiovascular system. All of this leads to more stress on the heart as well as most major organs. Bottom line, it doesn't matter what you do, but you must stay hydrated and keep your fluid volume high!
