Learning

By FionaDiaz Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Well, I don't have high cholesteral, to my knoweldge anyways, but we recently found out that my husband does.  I'm new here and new to the idea that my husband has a health problem!

I live in Guatemala and, unfortanitly, we have no health insurance to pay for medicines to lower his cholesterol, so I am here looking for ideas to lower it without the drugs.

I've found a few things as far as lowering the cholesterol naturally such as eating oatmeal, nuts, broccoli, strawberries and melons and eating more fish.  But I'm still looking for more tips and advice to help my husband's health.

Hopefully, I'll find something here or at least some support and advice from other's who are suffering from this as well.

Hi Fiona,

The best way to bring your husband's cholesterol back done is determined by which number is high.  What I mean is.  Let's say total cholesterol is 240.  What is his breakdown of HDL, LDL, and triglycerides.

If his LDL is high, start with cutting back on the saturated fats in his diet (trim fat off meat, limit the ice cream, switch to low fat milk, etc.).  If his triglycerides are high watch the simple sugars (soda, lemonade, candy, cake, etc.).

You want HDL to be high.  A good way to get HDL higher is through activity, as someone previously commented.

I am a dietitian and publish a free bi-weekly ezine focused on heart health and weight loss.  My next issue goes out May 31st with an article on fatty acids.  If you are interested go to http://eNutritionServices.com.

Good luck!  Lisa
