Small LDL Cholesterol: Epidemic of the New Century

There's a new risk factor for heart disease-and it's not high cholesterol. It's rapidly skyrocketed into first place as the number one most common trigger for heart disease.   Ask your family physician what the number one cause for heart disease is, and he/she will likely rep...

My understanding is that fasting cholesterol tests don't even actually check the LDL level.  It's a calculation as follows:

LDL = Total Cholesterol - HDL - Triglycerides/5

I checked my last couple of PCP tests and the numbers matched up exactly.  Maybe someone else's are based differently but it's easy to do the math and  check.  And that's the basis for determining that a lifetime supply of statins is needed?  That falls into the consipracy theory category.

My question is,

What is the predicted molecular mechanism by which it is thought that an overabundance of small LDL particles can exacerbate the development of atherosclerotic plaques?

I will thank any suggestion or reference about this particular subject.
